The Skin
The skin is the largest organ in the body, with the average person having over 20 square feet of dermal tissue. It is the body’s first line of defense against a variety of environmental agents and bacterial organisms.

The skin is infused with a vast network of arteries, veins and nerves that endow it with many sensory, motor and excretory functions. The skin regulates body temperature, synthesizes vitamin D when exposed to ultraviolet light and releases many metabolic waste products.

Skin is rich in the structural proteins collagen and elastin, which together lend skin its strength and elasticity. Collagen is among the most abundant proteins in the body, forming the structural framework for the body’s tissues and organs. In skin, collagen degradation leads to loss of skin elasticity and the development of wrinkles. Skin is also rich in hyaluronic acid, a glycosaminoglycan that can absorb large amounts of water and is responsible for the skin’s hydration.
