The Brain
The human brain is at the heart of the central nervous system. Through a complex network of electrical and chemical communication signals, the brain, cranial nerves and spinal cord integrate with and control the peripheral nervous system and thereby regulate virtually all of human activity.

The brain is divided into three parts: the forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain. Involuntary activities, such as heart rate, respiration, and digestion, do not require conscious effort and are considered to be part of the autonomic nervous system and are controlled by the hind and midbrain. Voluntary movement is categorized as part of the somatic nervous system. Higher mental activity, such as thought, reason, and abstraction, is consciously controlled and is generated by the forebrain.

The brain requires an enormous amount of energy, oxygen and nutrients for the variety of processes it performs. In an adult human, the brain uses 20 – 25% of the daily energy consumed in the body.

Keys to promoting brain health include a steady stream of well oxygenated blood, an abundant supply of essential fatty acids, espeically the Omega 3 fatty acid, DHA, regular exercise, a healthy diet, getting a good night’s sleep and regular release of stress.

SAMe
S-Adenosyl Methionine (S-adenosyl-L-methionine or SAM-e) is an amino acid derivative that has been clinically proven to benefit brain, liver and joint function. Found in all living cells, SAM-e has a fundamental function in human metabolism, as a methyl donor. By donating methyl groups in a wide variety of metabolic reactions, SAMe acts as a building block for the human body’s construction of several important molecules, including DNA, proteins, antioxidants, and phospholipids, among others.

SAM-e supports brain function by aiding in the synthesis of neurotransmitters (substances involved in the brain’s cell-to-cell communication). These compounds include L-dopa, seratonin, dopamine, epinephrine and phosphatidylcholine. SAM-e is a chiral molecule that exists in two forms. The biologically active form is the (S,S) structure, while the (R,S) structure is biologically inactive.
